Productivity is hands down one of the most important things to learn when you are in business for yourself. It is easy to fall into “unproductive mode” and end up feeling like you are going around in circles, then at the end of the day you have several tasks started and none complete – sounds familiar right?

Here are some great tips to get you started in becoming more productive during your day to day business life

1. Single-tasking Vs. Multi-tasking – In today’s society, we are taught to believe that we have to accomplish 5 tasks at one time or else we are being unproductive and this is simply not true! Sandra Bond Chapman Ph.D. states “Multitasking is a brain drain that exhausts the mind, zaps cognitive resources and, if left unchecked, condemns us to early mental decline and decreased sharpness.” And yet here we are each day attempting to multi-task. Slow down for a moment, organize your day and activities while planning to complete one task at a time and see how much more productive your day will be.

2. The above leads right into this next topic – Time-blocking. Simply put it means breaking your day up into time blocks. This helps keep you on track and organized at the same time. If you are working with multiple clients you can accomplish tasks for each client within a time block. For example, if you are working on social media accounts for four clients you could accomplish all four accounts in a specified time block. Keeping like activities lumped together keeps your brain from shifting from left to right brain functions, which literally exhausts your brain. When you begin working within your time blocks utilizing a task alarm will keep you laser focused and notified when it is time to move on to a new task.

3. When you are building out your time blocks it is important to build in number three on this list – Power Breaks. In between blocked activities, it is extremely important to build in 10-minute blocks to serve as your power break time. What is a power break? The answer is simple, it a time to do activities that will get your blood pumping and keep your energy level up. Take a brisk walk, do yoga or other forms of exercise and if you are a busy mompreneur – use the 10 minutes to plow through a household chore like dishes or meal prep. The breaks give your brain a chance to rest while giving your a body a chance to move around.
